A Gardener's Year at Descanso, Part One

Three posts that celebrate a year of the labor that makes the beauty.

 August - December, 2023
First day on the job, August 10.

Just four days on the job, got the first fencing lesson - this one, in the traditional style of the Golden Temple in Kyoto. We were schooled in this ancient garden-art by a sensei visiting from Japan. WOW.

August 24, my third week on the job, began with a slam, when Tropical Storm Hilary dumped 10-13 inches of rain on LA County. It was the first storm of what would become an epic rainy season for the garden. (View my next two posts, to see the gorgeous floral effects resulting from all this winter rain.)

September, 2023

In late September the pumpkins arrived for "Carved." Soon after, the straw bales arrived. In the next three weeks, the pond was mucked; the Pumpkin House, Throne and Corn-maze were built; and the Sea Dragon and Ofrenda were crafted and installed.

November - December, 2023

The swank wall-art garden installation gracing the Haaga-Sturt Gallery got refurbished. Learning-by-doing, led by the Hort staff, we gardeners got a fascinating lesson in cutting-edge modern horticulture: how to un-crate an old design, and curate, re-cultivate, and elevate, a new pattern into the frame.
Lesson Number 1: Lift with the legs. Those soil-filled container panels, each holding dozens of rain-soaked-and swollen succulents, are heavy.
